February 11, 1940 - February 2, 2025
Patricia "Pat" Kay Besett, 84, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at Sumner Place Skilled Nursing in Lincoln, Nebraska, surrounded by her loving children. Born on February 11, 1940, in Le Mars, Iowa, she was the daughter of Donald Verschoor Sr. and Kathryn (Dunn) Verschoor. Pat grew up in Sioux City, where she graduated from Bishop Helen High School before pursuing a career in cosmetology.
For over 25 years, Pat worked as a Unit Secretary in the Orthopedic Department at Saint Luke's Hospital, retiring in 2002. She was the oldest of five siblings and shared a special bond with her sister Barb, who worked alongside her at Saint Luke's and lived nearby for many years. Barb's presence in her life was a constant source of joy and grounding, and Pat deeply mourned her passing on June 24, 2024.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Kathryn Verschoor; her infant son, Thomas Michael, with whom she is now reunited; and her sister, Barb. She is survived by her children, Rob Besett (Diana) and Tricia Besett-Alesch (Shane); her siblings, Gloria Brincks (Marvin), Debora Plumley (Roger), and Donald Verschoor Jr.; as well as five beloved grandchildren: Samantha, Bailey, Zoe, Caitlin, and Joe.
Pat had a great love for animals and found joy in puzzles, crafting, and caring for her flowers. She also had a fondness for shopping and loved to share stories about her children and grandchildren, often with unsuspecting cashiers. Her faith was central to her life, and she found inspiration in Saint Francis of Assisi. She was often seen feeding the birds and squirrels, keeping leftover bread from Panera tucked away in her purse for them.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Sumner Place Skilled Nursing and the AseraCare Hospice team for their compassionate care during Pat's final days.
A private funeral service was held at Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes in Sioux City, with a graveside service at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Neptune, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Sumner Place Skilled Nursing Facility at 1750 S 20th St, Lincoln, NE 68502.
