Rapid City, S.D. formerly Sioux City

Vern M. Johns, 85, passed away on Aug. 7, 2024 at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, S.D.

The family would like to let friends and family know that they are gathering at Bob and Sandi’s house at 3 p.m. Aug. 31 to celebrate his life. Their address is 3245 Laurel Ave. in Sioux City, IA 51106 (Ph. 712-3339800).

Vern was born on June 29, 1939 to Linus F. Johns and Ethel (Marie) Armstrong in Iowa. He attended Sioux City schools. In 1957, he joined the U. S. Air Force and actively served until 1977, working as a Minuteman Missile Tech on underground missiles in refueling. During this time, he was stationed all over the United States, Korea, and Alaska. He retired in Rapid City, S.D.

Vern was a very good-hearted, loving person. He was always there to give anyone a helping hand. He helped raise step-sons, nephews, and grandkids.

His favorite thing was to tell stories of our family’s past and joke with everyone. Vern always made us laugh. He also loved his westerns, the Atlanta Braves, fishing, and bowling.

His son tells stories too of horse races that he loved. His latest stories have been about his special friends (Jim and Rose Andersen) that have helped he and Lauri through fun times and hard times.

Vern is survived by his wife, Laurie; children by a previous marriage Richard (Natalie) Johns of Minnesota, Vern (Skeet) Johns of Rapid City, Doug (Melony) Johns of Washington, Lorraine (Richard) Hersey of Montana, Brandon (Missy) McLain, James McLain; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; as well as sisters Judy M. (Gary) Blair of Allen, NE and Sandi (Bob) Dodds of Sioux City, IA. Sister-in-law Chris Zettle of Rapid City, SD.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brothers Frank Johns, Guy Johns, Mike Archer, Bob Archer, Phil Archer, Jack Archer, and Danny Archer; sister Geri Wilson.
