Death At Thompson
Deceased was Highly Respected and a Valuable Citizen of Our Neighboring Town
James Ellickson of Thompson, a well known and highly respected citizen of this county passed away last Saturday morning, February 12th. Death resulted from Diabetes. Funeral services were held at Thompson Tuesday afternoon, a short sermon being given at the Ellickson residence, after which the body of the deceased was taken to the United Lutheran Church. Rev. Halverson of Thompson delivered the main sermon, assisted by four other ministers. Rev. Brun of Lake Mills paid a tribute to the deceased as a friend. Rev. Salveson of this city spoke in behalf of the board of trustees of Waldorf College, of which the departed was a member, and placed a wreath on the casket as a token from the remaining members. Rev. Hegland, president of Waldorf College spoke in behalf of the students and faculty of Waldorf College and placed a wreath on the casket as a token from them. Rev. Malmin, pastor of the Synod Lutheran church at Thompson, made the final sermon and placed a wreath on the casket as a token of regard from the members of his congregation. One of the largest gatherings ever assembled at Thompson witnessed the funeral, the number being estimated at nearly five hundred people. There was a profusion of flowers and the church was very appropriately decorated, even the vacant chair previously occupied by the deceased in the church was draped in mourning. A male quartette sang several appropriate songs. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Chris Ellickson, a brother, and Mrs. Nels Solvoren and Mrs. Andrew Arveson, both sisters, these three being from Wautoma, Wis.: P. J. Hugelen, a brother-in-law, and Carl Hugelen, of Fergus Falls, Minn. were also present. The pallbearers were: W. C. Dickerson, C. T. Fletcher, Eric Houg, O. H. Swenson, E. H. Hurless and N. O. Berg., all of Thompson.
James Ellickson was born Sept 4, 1859 at Mount Morris, Wis., in the spring of 1881 he moved to Winnebago County. In November, 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Katie Larson. Ten children were born to this union. Mr. Ellickson was well known and respected over the entire county. In 1887 he was elected county supervisor and held the office for several terms. He was elected representative from this district in 1892, and served successfully for one term. Immediately after the expiration of this term he became manager of the Northern Lumber Co. yards at Thompson, which position he filled for seventeen years. For many years he was interested in the elevator at Thompson, now owned by the Farmers’ Elevator Co. He was the first mayor of Thompson and a member of the Thompson school board for seventeen years, besides serving as justice of the peace for a number of years. He was postmaster at Thompson for eleven years, his term expiring January 7, 1916, and he has also served for a number of years as vice president of the First National Bank there.
Mr. Ellickson was a loyal member of the United Lutheran Church and always took an active part in its work, being treasurer ever since it was organized and superintendent of the Sunday School for eleven years. He was also often chosen to represent the Thompson congregation at the annual meetings of the United Church. Besides being an active member of his church he was identified with everything that meant for the betterment of his community. He will be missed especially by the church. He was respected and honored by all who knew him.
Mr. Ellickson has been in ill health for the past few years, his decline being marked since he had a leg amputation several years ago on account of being afflicted with blood poison. Since January first he had been severely afflicted with diabetes, from which he died. He leaves to mourn him a sorrowing wife and five children: Cora, Edith, James, Marion and Mrs. J. W. Halvorson, all of Thompson.
