H. Carroll Van Hove
December 31, 1936 - September 7, 2019

Surrounded by his family, H. Carroll Van Hove, age 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2019, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Carroll Van Hove, a son of Henry and Dorothy (Intermill) Van Hove, was born on December 31, 1936, at home in Kossuth County, Iowa. On July 5, 1957, he married Leona Heitland, the gal he met at the Buffalo Center Skating Rink before he went into the Army, at the First Congregational Church. Subsequently, they were blessed with two daughters, Cindy and Bonnie. Carroll loved his girls and then came the blessings of three granddaughters and one grandson. In the past few years, he found even greater joy with his eight great-grandchildren.

Baptized and confirmed at the Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka, he currently belonged to the First Congregational Church. In his youth, he attended Country School and Titonka High School but completed his diploma at North Iowa High School. Right after his eighteenth birthday, he enlisted in the United States Army for three years. After his tour in Korea, he was stationed at Fort Sill in Oklahoma City until the end of 1957.

Carroll had two milk routes each day picking up milk for six years for the Buffalo Center Creamery. In addition, he trucked for the Fiber Glass Company, Allis Chalmers, Jensvold’s, and VanHorn’s. Next, he shelled corn and stacked hay until 1977 when he started farming on his own, his lifelong desire. In 1988, he began driving school bus, a job which he held for twenty-seven years. Moreover, he kept helping farmers with their field work.

Carroll enjoyed collecting original corn company caps and small John Deere tractors but especially liked maintaining his 630 John Deere with all original parts and two plows. He, also, kept busy with many woodworking projects for his family.

Carroll served on the Church Board, with the Fire Department, the Lions Club, the VFW and the American Legion. In July 2018, he and Leona went on an honor flight to South Korea, his most cherished memory.

Those left behind to cherish his memory included Leona, his wife of sixty-two years; his daughter, Bonnie, and her husband, Steven Wilson, of Sherburn, Minnesota; his son-in-law, Dallyn, and his wife, Deb Kotewa, of Fairmont, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Amber (Chuck) Knower, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Allissa (Matt) Traetow, of Fairmont, Minnesota, Jessica (Jed) Kaurich, of Fairchild, Wisconsin, and Thomas Wilson, of Sherburn, Minnesota; hid great-grandchildren: Lilly, Nolan, and Klaire Sweeney; Amarah Knower; Logan Madsen; and Teagan, Decker, and Paxton Kaurich; his brother, Robert (Judy) Van Hove; his sister, Karen (Ronald) Folkerts; his sister-in-law, Marlene Van Hove; his brothers-in-law, Jerry (Laura) and Dale (Carol) Heitland; and his sister-in-law, Judy Hanson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorothy Van Hove; his daughter, Cindy Kotewa, in August 1990; his brother, Keith, and a baby brother; his sister-in-law, Donna (Dale) Bredeson.

Funeral services for H. Carroll Van Hove, were held on Friday, September 13, 2019, at the First Congregational Church, Buffalo Center. Burial followed in Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center, with Military honors conducted by the VFW Post #4824 and the American Legion Post #21, Buffalo Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Network Beyond Ministry with Steve Oeffing, St. Jude Children's Hospital, or Diabetice Camp Hertko Hollow.
