Source for Epidemics 1890s

MAYHEW

I have in my possession a family portrait of the Wm C & Harriet (Blackman) Mayhew family, circa 1895, taken in Washington. One of the teenage daughters in the picture has a short, shaven hair. I would think it was shaved due to an illness of some sort. If it was lice (ick!), I would think more of the family would have the same cut, but the other women do not. Does anyone know of a source that I could use to see if there were any epidemics, or prevalent illnesses in the area during that time? She was not suffering from any chronic illness that I'm aware of, but I could be wrong. I'm just curious as to why she would have her hair shaved. Thanks in advance!
