Whittier College was in Salem, Iowa in Henry County. It was a Quaker college founded shortly after the Civil War. It was named after the poet Whittier who later donated a set of books to the college. The town of Salem was founded in 1839 and the Quaker church was founded in 1840 and is the oldest Quaker church west of the Mississippi. Salem, Iowa is well know as being a stop on the underground railroad. That's all I know. I'm sure if you contact the Henry County Historical Society they will be more than happy to provide you with more information.
