Thanks, Bill. The SF earthquake was in 1906. I've found the adoption record of the "Mary Elizabeth Adams" who was my grandmother's biological sister. She was born in Jefferson Co. I can find nothing more about her in Jefferson Co. after about 1883.

Mary Jane Kearns was my grandmother's adoptive sister and lived in Wapello Co. Census records say she was born in NY. My grandmother married in Wapello Co. 1892.

I've been trying to prove which "sister" my grandmother was referring to when she said she was lost in the earthquake. I'm about to decide the story has no validity! Don't know why she would have told my Dad that.
