A former Bonaparte man has drowned in an accident near Bay City, Michigan.
Thomas B. Sexton, 46, of Cedar Falls, a merchant seaman, was aboard a tanker when it exploded at a pier Sept. 16.
Sexton, a graduate of Bonaparte High School, had lived in Cedar Falls for approximately 20 years and had been a merchant season for Cleveland Tankers, Inc. for 19 years, sailing the Great Lakes.
He had been a seaman aboard the M.V. Jupiter for 1 1/2 days when it erupted in flames.
Crewman reportedly saw Sexton jump overboard after the explosion and start swimming to shore. His body was recovered Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Seventeen other crewman were injured in the explosion.
Sexton's father, Claude D. Sexton, lived near Bonaparte.
