Great-Grandfather

We have been attempting to find any information on my great-Grandfather Charles Thornton. He was born in England in 1855/56. Don't know when he came to the United States, but he married my great-Grandmother in Appanoose County (license was obtained in Wayne Co) in Jan of 1892. They lived in Mystic when my grandfather was born.
Family lore has it that Charles left for work one day and never came home, leaving his wife with 3 small children. She eventually remarried in 1902.
As close as I can come, he left somewhere around 1898, either before or after the birth of their last child. He was a Jeweler by trade.
If anyone has any ideas about how to go about locating where he went, or what happened to him, I'm open to all suggestions !!!
