I have Great-Grandparents Sever/Cevert/Sivert/Siver/Sjur Lars Teigland b. 18 Nov 1831 in Norway - d. 4 Apr 1913 in Minnesota (may have also been Larsen/Larson) and Anna (Soldahl) b. 12 Nov 1838 in Norway - d. 14 Aug. 1927 in Minnesota - who came over from Norway in 1864 shortly after their marriage along with two of his brothers.
(One brother took the name Larson and this became the name of the branch that homesteaded in Wisconsin. Another took the name of Olson and they later homesteaded in Iowa. My grandfather chose the name of Teigland probably from the name of the farm they had on the shores of Hardangerfjord and it was this name that homesteaded in Lyon County, Minnesota - as noted by Elizabeth Teigland, their Granddaughter)
The Teigland/Larson family moved first to Jefferson Prairie, Wisconsin, and then moved to the Story County, Iowa area (one family tree on Ancestry mentions Union and another mentions Story City - but can't "prove" either location, other than Story County) about 1866 (Son, Lewis, born 3 Mar. 1865 and Daughter, Martha, both born in Jefferson Prairie, Wisconsin in Feb. 1866 and daughter, Herbor/Herborg, born 15 Feb. 1867 in Story County Iowa in 1867). There was a Daughter, Anna, born 28 Sept. 1868; a Daughter, Olena, born Apr 1870; and a Son, Oscar, born 15 Aug 1872, all born in Story County, Iowa. They were in Story County until moving to Minnesota in at least Aug. of 1872 (Daughter, Johanna, born 3 Oct 1874 in Nordland Twp, Lyon County, Minnesota). Daughter Oleana, died before May 1875, but have very little knowledge of this child. Have not been able to find any info on where she died, so don't know if it was in Story County or if she may have died during the move to Minnesota. I have NOT located a grave for her in the Hemnes Lutheran Church Cemetery in Nordland Twp. (by Minneota - if you follow County Road 8 out of Ghent and County Road 3 out of Minneota - the church and cemetery are located where the two roads intersect.) I found information that says that Story County began keeping marriage records in 1854, birth and death records in 1880 and land records in 1853. I also know the Story County Court House burned. Even if it hadn't burned, he didn't own land, but worked for others in the area. What is the best way of trying to find out more information for time span that they were in Story County? I did find a family on the 1870 Census with the last name Larson with the correct first names and correct ages, but how do I prove they are my family? I know this is long, but this is the information that I have to go on. Suggestions on where to look would be most helpful. I will be in that area on June 26th, but it won't help if I don't have any idea where to start looking. Is there a historical society that might have information on Norwegian families back that far? Is there a list of churches that were in existence back in that time period and would they be in English or Norwegian? Any tips that would help point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
