Former Mayor Paine Dies at The Hospital

Taken Ill At Commencement Time; Heart Attack Fatal

Frank D. Paine, mayor of Ames for two terms until April, 1942, when he declined to run for reelection, died at the Mary Greeley hospital Tuesday, following numerous heart attacks during the past two years. He was taken with an attack at the commencement exercises on June 5th at the college and was taken to Mary Greeley hospital.

Not only did he serve with distinction as a mayor of Ames, but he devoted many hours to civic enterprises. He never was too busy to do a most efficient job, whatever the task might be. He worked very hard while mayor of Ames, giving many problems his most arduous thought and study. College duties multiplied with the opening of the European war and doubled after we became involved.

General Engineering Head

Professor Paine had bee head of the general engineering department since its origin in 1929. He became associated with the college teaching staff in 1912 as an instructor in electrical engineering, having graduated from here in that department in 1909. He was made an associate professor in 1918 and professor of electrical engineering in 1919. Until 1929 he served in that capacity.

He was student personnel director until 1934.

The results of the industrial survey of Iowa from 1929-31 were published by Paine as the "Book of Iowa." He had been the field engineer in charge of the survey. He also served as a member of the Iowa state planning board and developed a system for making appraisals of all utilities for taxation while acting as appraisal engineer for the Iowa state board of assessment and review.

Consultant

From 1914 until the time of his death, Paine had served as a consulting engineer, working on appraisals, rate studies and management of public utilities and the design, construction, operation and appraisals of electric transmission lines and substations.

Iowa Born

Frank D. Paine was born March 7, 1886, at Burt, Iowa, the son of Denison and Sarah Dockwell [should be Stockwell] Paine, descendants of early settlers in Iowa. He entered Iowa State college in 1905 and was graduated with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering in 1909. In college he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, honorary electrical engineering fraternity; Tau Beta Pi, honorary engineering fraternity, and Delta Upsilon, social fraternity. He gave the name to Veishea and was always interested in student activities and affairs and was a booster for the erection of the Memorial Union at the college.

He was married to Miss Grace Rees of Nevada and they established their home in Ames. Two sons were born, Rees of Warren, Ohio, with the General Electric company, and Frank, 16, at home.

Services Today

He was a member of the Congregational church and the Kiwanis club for many years. Ames has lost a citizen of great worth, and the college an educator of outstanding ability and acumen and the students a true, loyal friend, who took time to make their problems his.

Funeral services were held at the Memorial Union today, in charge of Rev. A. R. McLaughlin.
