Final Rites Held Sunday for Frank G. Woodman
Maxwell, Feb. 25 -- Last rites for the late Frank G. Woodman, 80, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church. The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. John C. Turner and Rev. P. R. Epley of Loring, pastor of the Evangelical church. The Methodist men's quartette, composed of Gerton Nelson, O. D. Houser, Harry Fackler and Martin Troup, sang "In the Summer Land of Beauty" and "Eastern Gate" and Mrs. Harold Molher sang "Sunrise" with Mrs. Gerton Nelson at the piano. The floral offerings were most beautiful and were carried by Mrs. Forest Cooper and Mrs. D. G. Douglas. The pallbearers were Donald Hargraves, Vick Bloomberg, Leo Stoll, Scott and Lee Clark and Basil Caple.
Mr. Woodman came to Iowa from Illinois with his parents when a small boy and lived with them on the same farm 1 1/2 miles south of Maxwell, which he afterward farmed and now owns. The old homestead burned to the ground about two years ago.
He had been a resident of Maxwell for 31 years and resided in the home he built on Main street in the summer of 1910, where he passed away. He had been confined to his bed and home the past 16 months following a series of strokes. His illness dated back to 6 1/2 years ago when his health first began to fail. Until then he had been an active farmer and cattle feeder.
The pastor read the following at the service:
Frank George Woodman, son of George and Laura Woodman, was born in Cane [sic] county, Ill. on May 27, 1860. When a small boy he came with his parents to Iowa, where his father bought a farm in northern Polk county."He was married to Lottie Emily Clark at Des Moines. This union was blessed with two children, Bessie Mae Mills of Spencer, Ia. and Orville J. on the home farm at Maxwell.
"When his father departed this life, he came back and took charge of the farm which he owned at the time of his death.
"When a young man about 30 years old, he was converted in a revival meeting at Peoria and found that blessed peace and joy in his heart of knowing that his sins were washed away and he was a new creature in Christ Jesus.
He spent much time in reading the Bible and memorizing scripture. He helped build two Methodist churches, the one at Peoria and the other at Maxwell. He gave liberally to the Bible college at Oskaloosa for the education of young men and women.
He was always ready to help those in need.
During his illness he did not complain and always had pleasant smile for everyone. His testimony was that he was ready to go when the Lord would call him to the Home Over There.
He was lovingly attended through 6 1/2 years of illness by his wife.
He leaves besides his wife, two children (Bessie) Mrs. Alta Mills of Spence and Orville J. Woodman of Maxwell, one brother, Charles Woodman of Sulphur Springs, Ark., one sister (Stella) Mrs. Walter Harper of Garden Grove, Calid., three grandchildren, Mrs. Donald Hargraves of Spencer, Mrs. Gale Ingersoll of Phoenix, Ariz. and Esther Woodman of Maxwell, and three great grandchildren, Lestitia and Gayland Hargraves of Spencer and Forest Woodman of Ferguson.
Burial was in the Peoria cemetery.
