Pleasant Grove Get-Together
The members of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery association held their annual meeting Sunday, July 5, at the pleasant country home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Nolan in southwest Howard township. Charlie Hughes was host to the group as he has been for a number of years. This group is composed of representative members of pioneer families who live in various parts of the county, but who take an active interest in keeping the pioneer cemetery as well as the yard of Pleasant Gove church, in fine shape. It is a joy to people who have relatives buried there to come and find the graves so well cared for.
The members brought well-filled baskets and enjoyed a fine fellowship picnic dinner on the lawn.
About 3 o'clock, the president, Mrs. Rex Hughes, called the group together. After repeating the Lord's Prayer, the business meeting was conducted. Minutes were read and reports given. Reports show that financially, and in every other way, the association had a fine year. Casper Thompson was present, as township trustee.
Various ways for improving the grounds were discussed and Charlie Hughes was appointed chairman of the permanent Improvement committee.
Mrs. Rex Hughes was re-elected president and Charlie Hughes, vice president, Pat Nolan is secretary and treasurer. Mrs. Balus Howland, who has served so long and well as secretary and treasurer asked to be relieved of her duties. She will, however, continue as an assistant.
We were happy to have Mrs. Grace Hughes Carroll of Kelley as a guest; also Mrs. Patrick Nolan and son Mike from Kansas. Three new members were welcomed, all from pioneer families, Floyd Sanders, Laura Morgan and Mrs. Iva Kersey Ripkey.
The host served ice cream to the crowd as his annual contribution to the enjuoyment of the members. The ladies had brought angel food cakes. This meeting has become sort of a "Homecoming Day" for old friends and is looked forward to during the year. -- Mrs. Geo.R. Sowers
