Mrs. Marian Jones Clark, age 99, of Orange City, Iowa, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.
The family will be hosting a service celebrating her life on Sunday, December 29, at 4:00pm, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service beginning at 3:30pm.
Marian was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 29, 1925, the daughter of Clarence Wesley and Katherine Ann (Welty) Jones. At the age of seven, she left Chicago with her mother and two siblings and traveled via boat to Quito, Ecuador. She grew up in Quito, where she graduated from the Alliance Academy. She worked as a bilingual secretary in the American Embassy before attending Hunter College in New York City, where she earned a music and Spanish degree.
She married Robert (Bob) Bauman Clark on June 23, 1946, in Bellrose, Long Island. They returned to Ecuador later that same year to serve as missionaries with HCJB radio and television for 28 years. Marian used her gifts as a writer and musician to direct, act, write, edit, and produce programming for the radio station and also “Amazonas” television. Returning to the United States to care for aging parents, she worked for Project Look-up in Clearwater, Florida, and then served on staff at Agape Ministries at Park Avenue Baptist Church in Titusville, Florida. While there, she prepared workbooks to go with the video sessions of Pastor Peter Lord’s popular Bible series. She is the author of three books for “Tweeners” about Jesus’ earthly ministry: Joss’ Revenge, Benji’s Sicarii Sword, and Rebekkah’s Dream. Prior to moving to Orange City, she belonged to Lakeside Community Church of Middleburg, where she and Bob were founding members.
Six months after the death of her husband, Bob, on March 18, 2003, in Middleburg, Marian moved to Orange City and became known for her knitting and translation/interpretation work. She loved attending the different activities of her grandchildren. As a member of Trinity Reformed Church, she served as an elder, played the organ, and conducted a bilingual knitting class. She enjoyed her work as an interpreter at the Orange City Hospital, keyboarding Bible portions in foreign languages through Wycliffe Bible Translators, and encouraging Hispanic prisoners through Crossroads Ministries. For the last 5 years, she has been living at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City. As a family, we are so grateful for the many who served and ministered to her needs through those years.
She is survived by her three children and their families, Bob Clark and his family, Vicki and Stephen King, Debbie and Russel Lundy, Carolyn and Mark Gaedtke, and Kathy and Wil Long; Marji and Ed Elzey and their family, Jennie Burkett and Rob and Liz Elzey; and Rick and Karen Clark and their family, Coralie and Will Cosgrove, Crystal Clark, Melissa and Joel Bundt, and Richie and Teylor Clark; 39 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law and her husband, Carol and Bob Wenninger;her brother-in-law, Doug Clark, and several nieces and nephews.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years; her brother, Dick Jones; two sisters and their husbands, Marji and Marvin Steffins and Nancy and Carl Farley; a sister-in-law, Peggy Lord; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Clark.
Memorials will be given to Reach Beyond, Formerly HCJB, or Gospel Fellowship Association for the support of Marian’s grandchildren, Stephen and Vicki King, who are serving in Magdeburg, Germany.
