Virginia Hemerson, one of two children born to Floyd and Inga (Peterson) McCreary, was born July 13, 1922 in Churdan, Iowa.
Virginia grew up in Bradgate, Ia where she met the love of her life, Donald Hemerson. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa where she was a cheerleader and graduated to become a teacher. She married Donald Hemerson on December 13, 1942 and raised their two oldest children while Donald was serving overseas during World War ll. Virginia started one of the first pre-school centers at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa while her husband attended the College of Veterinary Medicine. They moved to Sheldon in 1953 and lived there until Donald passed in 2008. She lived with her daughter, Barbara and son in law, Wayne Snyder in Kansas City until she passed.
Virginia's true passion in her life was her family. Whether it was vacationing in Okoboji, shopping with or for her family or attending family events. She truly loved being a wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma. One of the highlights of her life were six trips that she and her husband, Donald, took with their eighteen grandchildren. Many life long memories were created during those adventures. Virginia loved to play bridge and was a member of the same bridge club in Sheldon along with Beth Hickman and Dee Boster for over fifty years. Virginia was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cub Scout den mother and was active with the Village Northwest outreach program. She and Donald fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Denmark and Norway the land of their ancestors, in 2001.
Virginia will be remembered for kind and loving spirit by all that came to know and love her. She shall be dearly missed.
Survivors include her four children, Judith and Bradley Gross of Minneapolis, MN, Barbara and Wayne Snyder of Kansas City, Mo, Dr. Donald and Lorna Hemerson of Greeley, Co and Cartha and Gary Smit of Wichita, Ks, 18 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
