The New J. S. Encounters Difficulties
On LeClaire Rapids
~
Clinton Age: –The new steamer, the J. S., belonging to Capt. Streckfus, and which made her first run to this city Sunday, got stuck on the rocks on the rapids below LeClaire Monday afternoon. The accidently occurred at 5:30 o’clock. The steamer had just left LeClaire and was a few miles down the stream when a high wind which was blowing drove her on a government pier. The boat left here at 3:30 o’clock. There was but a few passengers on board from here, but more were taken on below, and a number came up from Davenport on the Winona and caught the J. S. at LeClaire. While no one was injured, the damage to the boat was quite heavy. One of her rudders were lost and about a third of her wheel was smashed. The Winona was at Fort Byron landing freight. The pilot of the damaged steamer signaled to her and she immediately put back to the scene of the accident. The J. S. was on the rocks pretty solid and it was with much difficulty that she was finally released. After some hour the Winona succeeded in pulling the injured craft off and towed her to LeClaire.
