Howard D. Pollard
Howard D. Pollard, of Merced, California, was born October 12, 1920 to Mr. and Mrs. G.C. Pollard of Derby, Iowa, and died October 8, 1965, following a heart attack at Huntington Lake California.
After his discharge from the army following World War II, he returned to Iowa and operated a grocery business in Kellerton. Five years ago, he and his family moved to Merced, where at the time of his death he was employed by the Davis Typewriter Company.
Four years ago Mr. Pollard and daughter, Deanna, were in a plane crash in Denver, Colorado, when 16 of the 122 persons aboard were killed. For several days following the crash, he was hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation, Deanna was admitted to the hospital but released the following day,
Mr. and Mrs. Pollard and their friends. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner of Merced, had gone to Huntington Lake to spend the weekend in the Turners’ cabin. The two men had gone for wood and upon their return to the cabin, Mr. Pollard was preparing a fire when he collapsed.
He was a member of the American Legion Post of Merced and the Masonic Lodge of Kellerton.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lowene: his daughters, Laura and Deanna of the home: two sisters, Mrs. C.G. Gleason of Des Moines, and Mrs. Glen Sissel of Kellerton.
Funeral services were held October 12 from the Mission Chapel of the Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced with the Rev.. John Miller of the First Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Garden of Flora Cemetery.
