John Calvin CARGILL, son of Eli and Hannah CARGILL, was born at Thompson Town, Penn., December 8, 1844, and departed this life at Diagonal, Iowa, August 15, 1930, aged 85 years, 8 months and 7 days.
When he was 11 years of age, the family came west, first locating in Henderson county, Ill., a year later moving to Warren county, where they rested until he was 21 years old, when they came to Ringgold county, Iowa. All the remainder of Mr. CARGILL's life was spent in the Ringgold and Union counties, where he followed his vocation as a farmer until a few years ago, he having owned and operated farms in both counties.
Early in life he united with the United Presbyterian church and for many years had been a member of that denomination at Shannon City, retaining his membership there until the end. He had always lived a consistent christian life, a life replete with service to his fellow men.
He was one of eight children, six of whom preceded him in death: Naomi STONE, Pennsylvania; Candace HENKLE, Lincoln, Neb.; Alvin, Mount Ayr; McLinn, Shannon City; Edson, Grant's Pass, Oregon; and Ezra, Diagonal. He leaves to mourn his death one sister, Mrs. Anna ARMSTRONG, of Collins, Iowa, and a number of neices and nephews.
Mr. CARGILL's last days were spent at the home of his neices, Bertha and Alice CARGILL, in Diagonal, and his sister, Mrs. ARMSTRONG, was with him when he was called by death. Another neice, Mrs. Thomas GAULE, of Bedford, had assisted in caring for him.
Short funeral services were held at the CARGILL home in Diagonal Sunday at 1 o'clock p.m., in charge of the Rev. J.E. MATHENY, pastor of the Diagonal Methodist church, followed at 2 o'clock by services at the Shannon City United Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. HAWNS, pastor of the Shannon M.E. church. Interment was made in the Shannon City cemetery.
