Gun Discharged When Prominent Dairyman Stumbles in Corral
Guy D[owlin]. CARTER, 43, a leader in dairy activies of Stanislaus County [CA], was killed instantly Sunday [January 8] by the accidental discharge of a shotgun at his home west of Turlock.
The gun was discharged when CARTER stumbled over a board as he was entering a corral to shoot a strag dog that for several days had been molesting his calves a coroner's investigation revealed. The tragedy occurred while the family was at the breakfast table.
Body Found By Son
CARTER's body was found by his son, Herschel, who became alarmed after the report of the gun was heard.CARTER moved to the Turlock district twenty-two years ago, since which time he had been a leader in dairy activities in Stanislaus County and the state. He had just completed a dairy plant of modern type which was to have been inspected this week preparatory to supplying grade A cream for the San Francisco market from a herd of fifty purebred Holstein cows.
Beside being a breeder of purbred Holstein dairy cattle, CARTER was a leader in 4-H Club work, a director of the California Holstein Breeder's Association, secretary of the Stanislaus County association and chairman of the dairy department of the Stanilaus County Farm Bureau.
He was born in [Maloy, Ringgold County] Iowa and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church here. Besides his widow, Mrs. Nora CARTER, he leaves two daughters, Elizabeth and Mima CARTER, a son,Herschel; his father John T[homas]. CARTER of Stockton [CA], and the following sisters and brothers: Grace CARTER, Stockton; Mrs. Helen CARPENTER, Reedley; Ardis CARTER, Santa Barbara; Rae CARTER, Fresno, and Clay CARTER, Ohio. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the J. W. Guy Chapel. Interment will be in Turlock Cemetery.
