OBITUARY

Audrey RICHEY HAUGE died February 12, 2004 in Shalimar, Florida. She was born March 10, 1911 in Ringgold County Iowa, the daughter of Clair and Ruby COX RICHEY.

Her early years were spent on an eastern Colorado homestead before the family returned to Iowa, where she graduated in 1929 from Mount Ayr high school.

On August 18, 1935 she was married to O. Kenneth HAGUE of Des Moines, Iowa. They moved to southern California where they lived until WW II. Kenneth left for the Pacific and Audrey worked at the Douglas Defense Plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma until the end of the war.

Upon the death of Audrey's sister, the HAGUES took her five small children into their home, loving and raising them as their own.

While living in Oklahoma, Audrey crafted, entertained and taught others the art of puppetry and marionettes. She wrote and directed puppet plays and later created "Puppets for Learning" for use in grade school classrooms. Audrey was an avid reader and attended seminars and took college courses. She was a skilled needlewoman, handcrafter and painter, a published newspaper columnist, short story writer and poet. In 1996 she was inducted into the International Poetry Hall of Fame.

She was an active member of the Christian Church [Disciples of Christ] since 1939, working in the church at both the local and district levels. For many years Audrey was a church secretary, not only in her own denomination, but also in other churches. She edited their newsletters. She enjoyed working with children and youth as a teacher of Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and as a sponsor of youth fellowship groups. For 21 summers, she worked as a counselor at church camps and conferences. At the age of 90, and after 31 years of faithful service as an active elder, the First Christian Church [Disciples of Christ] of Fort Walton Beach, Florida honored her with the title of Elder Emeritus.

With her family raised, Audrey fulfilled a long time wish and studied to become a nurse, working in that capacity in hospitals, nursing homes and with private patients well into her 80s.

After living 43 years in Oklahoma, she moved to Bob Hope Village, Shalimar, Florida in April 1985, where she lived until her death.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband O. K. HAGUE; sons, Richey HAGUE and John, James, Gene and Paul TURNER; sisters, Thelma TURNER, Cleta VALE and Doris COVERDELL; and brother Duane C. RICHEY.

She leaves to mourn a daughter Norma ELY of Dallas, Texas; a sister Velda FENTON of Osceola, Iowa; grandchildren, Scott CARSON, Timothy and Todd TURNER, Belynda HOBBS and Cathy HUDSON, all of Washington state, Karen ILIFF of Boston, Massachusetts, Randy TURNER of Denver, Colorado and Lisa BLACKSTON of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and daughters-in-law Phyllis, Carol and Dorothy TURNER; ten precious great-grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews and friends.

Audrey's ashes will be taken to Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr to rest beside those of her husband and infant son.
