OBITUARY - E. C. GAINES.

Elisha Calvin GAINES was born in Kentucky June 10, 1868, and died at his home in Benton [Ringgold County, Iowa] March 25, 1923, at the age of fifty-four years, nine months and fifteen days. He was in poor health for several years but had been about his work until Saturday morning when he took suddenly ill and passed away at 7:30 Sunday morning.

When a small child he moved with his parents to Illinois where he spent his boyhood days. He joined the Baptist church and was a constant worker in the church during his younger life. He was united in marriage to Dora SINCO March 2, 1892, and to this union was born two children, Mrs. Veneta HALEY and Mrs. Vera DILLENBURG, both of Benton. He leaves to mourn, his wife, two children, four grandsons, his mother of Oklahoma, one brother of Illinois, and a host of friends. His father, one sister and three brothers preceded him in death. Mr. GAINES was known to be thoughtful and kind to his family and those about him. He was always known in his business and a good merchant with a smile to all who entered his store.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church of Benton, March 27, 1923, by Rev. Dennis DILLE, and the remaines were laid to rest in Benton cemetery.

The things which our weak judgements here have spurned,
The things o'er which we grieved."

NOTE: Elisha's parents were JarviS GAINES (1843-1922) and Elizabeth Ann (O'DELL) GAINES (1850-1929). Dora M. (SINCO) GAINES, wife of Elisha Calvin, was born in 1867, and died in 1955 with interment at Benton Cemetery. Veneta (GAINES) HALEY, daughter of Elisha and Dora, was born in 1896, and died in 1966 with interment at Marshalltown Cemetery near Benton, Iowa, beside her husband Arthur (1888-1973). Vera L. (GAINES) DILLENBURG, daughter of Elisha and Dora, was born in 1901 and died in 1968, and was interred at Benton Cemetery beside her husband Ralph D. (1896-1952).
