Merlyn L. Richey, 92, passed from this life on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at Gowrie Care Center in Gowrie, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Merlyn was born on February 1, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa to Lyle and Mabel Leatta (Dobberthein) Richey. He was a graduate of Valley Junction High School. During World War II, Merlyn had served in the Army Air Force as a mechanic maintaining the Bombers. On October 5, 1946, Merlyn married Genevieve Iola Nelson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA and they made their home in Clive. For nearly 28 years, he was formerly employed with Amoco Oil Co. in the Maintenance Department. Merlyn was a member of Isaac Walton League and the Urbandale United Church of Christ both in Urbandale.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his sister, Janet (Rodney) Constable of Des Moines; three sisters-in-law, Delores "Dee" Buske of Farnhamville, IA, Georgene Richardson of Webster City, IA and Gitta Nelson of Ankeny; and a host of extended family members. Merlyn was preceded into eternal life by his parents; wife, Genevieve in 1994; two brothers, Robert Richey and Donald Richey; one brother-in-law, Earl Nelson; and two sisters-in-law.
