Esther Louise (Buchholz) Riecks, the daughter of John and Amanda (Mielke) Buchholz was born near Melvin, Iowa on April 5, 1913. She lived her youth and received her education at Melvin.
She was united in marriage to William Riecks on May 24, 1942, at Las Vegas, Nev. Following their marriage, they resided in California until 1945 when they moved to Melvin. While residing in Melvin, Bill owned and operated Riecks Electric. Esther was a cook at the Melvin School from 1958 to 1981. Following Bill's retirement, they also owned and operated the Sportsman's Restaurant at Melvin from 1965 to 1970. Esther entered the Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center at Sibley, Ia. on January 26, 2001 and she died there on October 25, 2001 at the age of 88 years, six months, and 20 days.
Esther is survived by her children: Randy and Sue Riecks of George, Ia., and Sandi and Ross Cox of Ashton, Ia., her grandchildren: Andrea, Philip, and Jennifer Riecks and Jed and Jared Cox, one sister-in-law, Gertie Buchholz of Ripon, Calif., a number of nieces and nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents; one sister, Elda Harms; two brothers: Marvin Buchholz and Alvin Buchholz; and a brother and sister in infancy, Elmer and Elsie.
She was an active member of the American Lutheran Church of Melvin. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, and cooking. Esther was an avid sports fan and had been featured as one of Melvin's great sports fans. She also shared the gift of hospitality and enjoyed entertaining friends in her home and will be remembered for the many pies she made for people. She took great pride in her grandchildren and loved them very much. She enjoyed being able to attend all of their activities.
Memorial services were held October 29 at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin with Pastor Jane Johnston officiating.
Casket bearers were Andrew Riecks, Philip Riecks, Jennifer Riecks, Jen Cox, Jared Cox, Amanda Buse, Alicia Buse, and Adam Buse.
Congregational hymns were, "How Great Thou Art," and "Borning Cry." Special music was by Jennifer Riecks and organist was Elaine Werlinger.
Burial was in Baker Township Cemetery, Melvin. Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
