(Muscatine) Judge Jerome Carskaddan, met death in a tragic manner yesterday when he was drowned in the Mississippi river at Muscatine. The eminent jurist's death shocked the entire community in which he has resided for more than a half century. Judge Carskaddan appeared to be enjoying his usual health during the day and this afternoon left his office and walked to the river front. He was seen to walk out on a float to which a launch was tied and later to sit down upon a plank with the lower part of his body in the water. Before those who were near could reach him he was seen to drop into the stream and was carried outward by the current. He struggled for a few seconds and then sank below the surface.

He had been afflicted with vertigo for some time and business associates believe that his death resulted when he became affected with dizziness. Judge Carskaddan was one of the most esteemed jurists in Iowa. Jerome Carskaddan came to Iowa in the early fifties and was elected county attorney in 1856. Later he was chosen as judge of the district court of Muscatine county and has been prominent in local business and bar circle since that time. He was for years president of the Muscatine State bank. The coroner's jury found that Judge Carskaddan's death was due to accidental drowning.
