Last rites for Donald E. Bemis, 94, were held at West Liberty Oct. 2 with the Rev. Donald Thompson officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge cemetery, West Liberty, with military rites by the American Legion.
Mr. Bemis died at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, Sept. 30.
The son of Carcel and Elizabeth Carpenter Bemis, he was born at Plainfield, Vt. June 21, 1893. He moved to West Liberty in 1916. He married Jessie Phelps in West Liberty June 15, 1923.
He was a veteran of World War I. While living in West Liberty he operated a grocery store, was police chief and worked for 30 years at the Walter Rexall Pharmacy.
He was a member of the West Liberty United Methodist church and the West Liberty American Legion.
He is survived by 2 nephews, Raymond and Ralph Bemis, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; 2 nieces, Betsy Walker, Naples, Fla. and Marjorie Cushing, Hollywood, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother and 2 sisters.
