24 July 1867 - 20 March 1949George J. Hintermeister was born 24 July 1867 in Muscatine, Iowa, and was the fifth child born in America to his German immigrant parents. George's father, John (Johannes), came to America in 1854 and his mother, Elizabeth, came to America on 24 July 1855.
George came from a large family of eight children. George and his siblings are listed in the order of birth as follows:

On 21 October 1890, George married Mary E. Bell at the German Evangelical Church (now combined with the United Church of Christ). Mary E. was born 7 March 1870 in Muscatine and was the daughter of Hugh M. (April 1841 – 25 Mar 1907) and Mary Jane (McElravy) Bell (Mar 1846 – 14 Sep 1925). The Muscatine marriage records show that Hugh and Mary Jane were married on 23 May 1865. The 1870 census shows that Hugh’s occupation was coal miner, and the 1880 census shows that he was working in a brickyard. The 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census, shows that both Hugh and Mary came from Pennsylvania, however, the 1910 Census shows that Hugh came from Pennsylvania and Mary Jane from Missouri.
Mary E. Bell came from a large family of seven children. Mary had five sisters and one brother: Mary and her siblings are listed as follows:
***Sherman****(Jul 1866 – 7 Feb 1935)

However, the 1899 - 1900 City Directory shows that he worked at Hershey's Lumber Company.
In 1900 George was again employed as a teamster, as stated in the 1900 census. The census also showed that he owned his home at 1104 New Hampshire Street free and clear, i.e. no mortgage. The Court House records show that George took out a mortgage on a track of land1 in South Muscatine on 14 November 1901, presumably to start his farm.
In 1910 according to the census, the family owned their home at 414 Evans Street. George stated that he owned a mortgage free farm and was working as a farmer. In addition to his family, the Census shows that the family was renting a room to a boarder. The boarder's name was Malini Labricka, an 18 year old school teacher from Illinois.
Both Mary and George were members of the Evangelical and Reformed Church.
On 6 June 1946 Mary passed away at the age of 76. She died at her home at 217 Grandview Avenue after a six month illness. Mary is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
Three years later on 20 March 1949, George died at his home located at 217 1\2 Grandview Avenue. George's obituary stated that he was a retired farmer and 81 years old. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
