Rosina Magdalena Dold was born in Tuttlingen, Wurttemberg, Germany on 9 July 1821. Rosina had one younger sister named Elizabeth Barbara Dold (4 November 1822 - 8 February 1887), and a much older half sister, Christiana Langenbach (30 November 1803 - 10 December 1871), who generally went by the name Christiana Lupp. Christiana was born out of wedlock to Rosina's mother in Thurgau, Switzerland.

Rosina's father was Johann Michael (Michael) Dold (born 18 October 1796), and her mother was Christiana Luzz (born 9 July 1781). Michael and Christiana were married on 13 February 1821. It should be noted that the names "Luzz" and "Lupp" appear to be used interchangeably in the Tuttlingen Church Family Register . It is also an interesting coincidence that the registers show that the maiden names of both of Christiana Luzz's grandmothers were Dold. This may not really be that unusual, however, as the Tuttlingen Family Church Register lists a large number of Dold families living in this area.

The records show that the Dold family line had been living in Tuttlingen for a number of years. The first Dold recorded in Tuttlingen was Sigmund Dold (1598 - 1670), however, the Dold family had its origins in Alsace-Lorraine, France, where the earliest known Dold surname appeared in 1414.

The Tuttlingen Family Register states that Michael Dold's occupation was shoemaker. It also shows that the Michael Dold family went to America in 1848. The translated passage reads as follows: "With wife and 2 daughters went to America in 1848."

Ship arrival records show that the Dold family was part of a group of 13 people from Tuttlingen who traveled to America in 1848. The ship “Columbia” departed Bremen on 20 March 1848 and arrived 59 days later at New Orleans on 18 May 1848. There were originally 181 passengers on board, but there was one death, a one year old infant, during the voyage. The stated final destination for the entire Tuttlingen group is St. Louis. Please note that Rosina Dold’s name is incorrectly spelled as Gesina in the manifest. Also note that her future husband, Jacob Hintermeister, is also one of the passengers.

The Wuerttemberg Emigration Index shows that the entire Dold family requested permission to emigrate from Wuerttemberg in February 1848. This was the earliest recorded request for a Dold family to immigrate to America.

The King's Court of Tuttlingen records, which were included in the immigration records, show that Johann Michael Dold was trying to obtain the court’s permission to take eight (8) year old Johann Ludwig Lupp (also written as Luzz) to America with his family. Johann Ludwig Lupp (born 12 June 1840) was born out of wedlock to Christiana Lupp (daughter of Christiana Dold prior to marriage to Johann Michael Dold). According to the records, Johann Michael Dold is his step father, and Johann Ludwig is the nephew of Rosina Magdalena Dold.

There were several different court dates and hearings listed starting on 11 February 1848, but the last recorded court date was 29 August 1848. Since Johann Ludwig Lupp is listed as one of the passengers in the Columbia ship manifest, it means that the Dold family along with Ludwig Lupp left Germany prior to receiving court approval. However, the Tuttlingen Family Register shows that permission was eventually granted by the King's Court after the natural mother, Christiana Lupp stated that she planned to immigrate at a later time. The Tuttlingen Church records show that Christiana died in Basellandschaft, Germany, on 10 December 1871, so she apparently never went to America.

On 31 December 1848, Rosina Dold married John Jacob (Jake) Hintermeister (20 November 1820 - 24 February 1915) in St. Louis, and Elizabeth Barbara Dold married John Jacob (Jacob) Dold (16 November 1826 - 20 January 1876) on 3 December 1848. Although Jacob Dold and Elizabeth Barbara Dold had the same last name, they were only distantly related. A translation of the St. Louis German Evangelical Congregation Church records is as follows:

It may only be a curious coincidence, but the King's Court records show that Johann Ludwig Lupp's foster parent was named Johann Martin Riess, and the St. Louis marriage records show that the minister who married Rosina Dold and Jake Hintermeister was J.J. Riess (probably stands for Johann Jakob Riess). It may be possible that Johann Martin Riess and J.J. Riess were related, and that the Riess family was either friends or relatives of the Dold family.

Sometime during the next year and a half, both couples left St. Louis and moved to Muscatine, Iowa. However it is believed they arrived in 1849, as the obituaries of both Jake Hintermeister and Elizabeth Barbara Dold stated that they settled in Muscatine in 1849. The 1850 Census shows that Jacob and Elizabeth Dold were in Muscatine on 13 August 1850, and that Augst Dold (male, age 15, from Germany) was also living with them. However in the 1860 census he is listed as August Hoffman, and Augst was presumably not related to Jacob. Jacob's occupation was listed as brewer.

Jake and Rosina Hintermeister were listed in the 1850 Census on 17 September 1850, and Jake Hintermeister's occupation is listed as farmer.

Rosina's father is also listed in the 1850 Muscatine Census, however, his wife is listed as Maria (age 45, from Germany). The St. Louis German Evangelical Congregation Church records show that his first wife, Christiana Dold, died in St. Louis on 7 December 1848 at the age of 67. See translation below.

Catharine Dold (age 15, from Ohio) is also listed as living with this family, and is presumably the daughter of Maria by a former marriage. Michael's occupation is listed as shoemaker. He died 8 August 1853 at age 56, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

The records show that Jacob Dold was one of the original members of the "Muscatine Turnverein", the first German society in Muscatine . The Muscatine Turnverein was organized on 12 July 1856. It is also believed that Jacob Dold represented the First Ward in the Muscatine City Council for two years.

In August 1858 Jacob Dold and Jake Hintermeister went into partnership and started the Dold and Hintermeister Brewery, and in March 1859 they started the Great Western Saloon. In June 1859 Jake Hintermeister took over ownership of the saloon and Jacob Dold took over ownership of the brewery. In June 1868 Jake and Rosina sold the saloon and moved to their farm.

By 1860 Jacob Dold had accumulated some wealth. The 1860 Census lists the value of Jacob's real estate holdings at $7000, and shows that his personal estate was valued at $1000. The Census also shows that Jacob had a servant girl named Lena Gable (age 16, from Germany) living with the family.

Besides Jacob Dold's immediate family and the servant, the 1860 Census shows that two other people were living in the household:

***2) August Hoffman, age 28, a brewer, birthplace unknown (He may be the same person listed in the 1850 census as Augst Dold)

Jake and Rosina Hintermeister had three children, who are listed in order of their births as follows:

On 26 March 1873 Rosina died of erysipelas in the face at age 52. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

On 20 January 1876 Jacob Dold died at his home in South Muscatine at age 50. The cause of his death is attributed to a disease of the lungs and kidneys. After his death, Jacob's son, Charles, took over the operation of the brewery.

Elizabeth Dold survived her husband by eleven years. She died 8 February 1887 at age 61. The cause of her death is listed as an internal cancer. Both Elizabeth and her husband, Jacob, are buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Jake Hintermeister lived to the old age of 94. He died on 24 February 1915 at the home of his son, John Jacob (216 West Fifth Street). Jake is buried next to his wife, Rosina, in Greenwood Cemetery.
