Hi Lenore,
There are a number of John Baggs' in the late 1700's - I wish we could pin point which, if any, is the right John Baggs, father of John T Baggs.
With a name like Baggs, which does not relate to a trade (such as Smith) or place name (such as Woods) or physical description, (such as White) we think most if not all people with the Baggs name will come from the same family at one stage.
We have theories on the source of the name... some in the family say that the name is a shortened version of Baggson, meaning the sons of, or the tribe of Baga. Baga was possibly one of the Angle or Saxon chieftains who invaded Britain after the Roman Empire started to fade. The invaders gave their tribe’s names to the areas where they settled. The Canti tribe gave their name to what is now known as the county of Kent.
We know that the Baggs family came from the County of Berkshire in England, and we have a confirmed family tree going back to Will Baggs in 1422. There is a "History of the Baggs Family" that we are compiling which has a lot of the information on the family as it moved over the years from a village called Hinton Waldrist, Berkshire, England (1422 – 1660), then down the road to Stanford – in – the Vale, Berkshire (1661 – 1712) before moving to a village further south called Combe in Hampshire (1713 – 1770) before two brothers, William and Henry Baggs walked into the village of Hannington, Hampshire in 1771. Some of the Baggs family is still there - my Grandfather moved from there to Bristol in Western England in 1898 which is where I was born.
Along the line I have found three different John Baggs' from the right period
John Baggs born at Coombe 4th March 1750 but he died 2 months later
John Baggs born at Combe 27th March 1754
John Baggs born at Hannington in 1781, but he died at Hannington in 1836.Could the John Baggs born on the 27th March 1754 be John T Baggs' father? We have no trace of his death. He would have been 59 by the time he married and 73 before we drowned in 1827 (with a 4 year old son). Sounds a bit unlikely.
If you have any further information that could help us track him down that would be great!
