Frank Scoles, who formerly resided here, was drowned in Skunk River, near Oskaloosa Sunday afternoon. Scoles was about 25 years of age, and will be remembered as the boy who stabbed Jay Marsh some years ago while riding in the latter's wagon to town. For this assault he was sent to Fort Madison Penitentiary for two years. At the time of his death he was in the employ of the Rock Island Brewing Co.’s Oskaloosa agency.
It seems that a young man named Eugene McGlasson went in bathing, neither being able to swim. Scoles got beyond his depth and his companion was unable to help him. The body was taken to Oskaloosa and brought to Knoxville Monday afternoon, the funeral being held the same day.
