Formerly Rose HillBert Boggess Oskaloosa. Bert H. Boggess, 95, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 1, 2012, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born November 3, 1916, in Oskaloosa, the son of Robey and Lena Sondreggar Boggess. He graduated from the Rose Hill High School with the class of 1934, of which he was class president. Following high school Bert went to work for El-Jon Farms at Rose Hill, traveling coast to coast showing their cattle. On September 2, 1942, he entered the United States Navy, serving on the USS Brant during WWII. Upon his discharge, he returned to Rose Hill and went back to work for El-Jon Farms.
On November 7, 1953, Bert was united in marriage to Alveta Hiemstra Merrick at Oskaloosa, and Alveta died August 27, 2009. In the late 1940's, Bert went to work for the State of Iowa Highway Department, and retired after 30 years of employment. He had a lifelong love of Angus cattle, and continued to tend his cattle until he was 92 years old. He enjoyed coon hunting and raising coon hounds for 71 years.
His family includes his three children, John Boggess of Oskaloosa, Marilyn Jacoway of Ankeny, and Max Merrick of Apache Junction, Arizona; five grandchildren, Fred Allgood, Sandra Allgood, Michael Allgood, Zachary Boggess, and Jared Boggess; five great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren. Besides his wife, Bert was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Rick Allgood; three brothers, Robert, Victor, and Gerald Boggess; and a sister in infancy.
Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel Wednesday morning after 10 a.m. the family will be at the funeral chapel from 3:00 until 5 p.m. at which time a funeral ceremony will be held with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Private family burial will be held in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register 03 July 2012.
