VICE CONSUL - Robert Rinden, leaves February 9 for Hong Kong, where he has been appointed vice consul. Since July he has been in the foreign service training school in Washington D.C. Before that he was vice consul at Montreal, Canada. Mr. Rinden is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rinden (Feb. 2, 1940; source unknown - likely Oskaloosa Daily Herald).

CONSUL ROBERT RINDEN SAFE AT HONG KONG Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rinden, 133 K avenue east, have received the following communication regarding the safety of their son, Robert W. Rinden, American consul at Hong Kong “Radio from American consulate general Hong Kong dated eighth reports all staff safe. Please inform other relatives.” Signed, Cordell Hull, secretary of state. Robert Rinden is pictured above in front of a Buddist temple in Bangkok, November, 1941 with Kraisri Nimmanhaeminda his Thai friend and Harvard classmate. Mr. Rinden recently spent a month’s vacation in Thailand. During his stay in Bangkok he was a guest of the American minister to Thailand, the Honorable Willys R. Peck and Mrs. Peck. While at Chiengmal, about 500 miles north of Bangkok, he was entertained by a Thai friend and classmate of the Havard school of business administration.
