Page 4, Column 5John Strabel, 39, committed suicide about noon Sunday in the basement of his home, Coroner Chester Demaree, Lacona, said following an investigation. The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Orr’s Funeral Home.
Mrs. Strable found her husband’s body, a bullet wound in the temple, when he failed to come in for dinner after returning from a ride with a neighbor, Fred Smith.
Mrs. Strable said she heard no shot fired. She was preparing dinner and talking to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ferguson, who were to be guests for dinner, and had the radio on.
Mr. Strable had accompanied Mr. Smith to Prole and when dinner was ready, Mrs. Strable went to the Smith residence across the alley to find out if the men had returned. When she found that they had she returned home and went to the basement to look for him.
She found him with a single-shot 22-caliber rifle beside him. No reason was known for the act.
Surviving are his wife, three sisters, Mrs. Artie Dunn, Norwalk, Mrs. Carrie Stout, Des Moines, and Mrs. Grace Lull, Patterson, and one brother William Strable, St. Charles.
Interment at Blair Chapel cemetery.
