Doris Jean Carter, 77, of Grand Island died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Randy Blair will officiate.
Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later time in Blair Cemetery in St. Charles, Iowa. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Carter was born June 26, 1931, at Des Moines, Iowa, to Lloyd and Gladys (Dailey) Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert.
Survivors of the immediate family include two daughters and sons-in law, Helen and Larry Heil and Peg and Dale Gilbert, all of Grand Island; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Marilyn Carter of Plano, Texas, and Dan and Vickie Carter of Fair Oaks, Calif.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Dorothy Thompson of Bettendorf, Iowa; a sister, Arlene Jensen of Hartford, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Louise Thompson of New Mexico.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Tracy McEver, Tara Gilbert, Sara Brisco, Jason Carter, Kimberly Mercurio, Nicholas Carter, Douglas Gilbert and Stacy Gilbert; and four great-grandchildren.
Doris was raised in Des Moines, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, class of 1949.
She was united in marriage to Delbert B. Carter on Jan. 11, 1950, in Des Moines. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Des Moines, later moving to Hamburg, Iowa, where they raised their family.
Doris was a member of the Evangelical Free Church. She was a great cook and excellent seamstress, devoting her life to her children and grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death are her parents and a brother, Blair Thompson.
