"The greatness of a man is not measured in the amount of wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him." - Bob Marley

Mark Hollingsworth, a lifelong resident of Winterset, Iowa, passed away on January 19, 2025. He was 76 years old.

Mark Bernard Hollingsworth was born October 8, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa to N. Bernard and Leta (Cumings) Hollingsworth. He was a 1966 graduate of Winterset High School, and then went on to graduate from Iowa State University. He was united in marriage to Brenda Williams on June 26, 1971, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Mark and Brenda made their home in Madison County, where Mark took a deep interest in farming.

His love for farming was unmatched, rooted in his respect for the land and its ability to provide for generations. His greatest joy came from his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He cherished time spent with them, whether on the farm, at family gatherings, or simply enjoying their laughter.

Mark was a man of deep faith and dedication to his community. He was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset, where he served on the council, offering his wisdom and leadership to the congregation. His commitment to education and youth was evident during his tenure as a Winterset School Board member in the 1990s and, more recently, as a member of the Winterset Education Foundation. Mark also played an active role in supporting local agriculture as a proud member of the Madison County Cattlemen’s Association and the Madison County Pork Producers. He was a member of many other organizations over the years, starting with FFA in high school, Jaycees, and Madison County Farm Bureau. Mark was awarded the Good Neighbor award in 2014, and was a bus driver for Winterset Schools.

Mark was known for his warm smile and genuine interest in others. Whether meeting a stranger or chatting with an old friend, his friendly demeanor and curiosity about people’s lives left a lasting impression. He loved hearing and sharing stories, often finding joy in the unique experiences of those he met.

Mark will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Brenda Hollingsworth; his children, Julie Plant and husband Patrick Plant, Cary Hollingsworth, and Shelly Pease and husband Ross Pease. He was a proud grandfather to Jacob Plant and wife Bailey, Hayley Tank and husband Nick, Grace, Maddy, Josh, Lily, Jax, Seth, Dayne, and Saylor; a great-grandfather to Ainsley; his brother, Paul and wife, Cathy; and his sister, Barbara Hollingsworth. He is predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Leta Hollingsworth.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Winterset Education Foundation or St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mark’s family invites those who knew him to share their favorite stories and memories during the service, honoring the man who always valued the stories of others.
