LAST OF PIONEER FAMILY DIES; SET RITES TUESDAY
Funeral services will be held at the Lockwood - Jongewaard chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday for Dan Gardner, 82, son of a pioneer Rock Rapids family, who died Friday at Emmetsburg.
The Rev. Paul Freeman will conduct the service with interment in Riverview cemetery, where the rest of the family is buried.
Dan Gardner was the youngest son of Captain and Mrs. Washington Gardner and was the last remaining member of the family of six children. The Gardners lived here in the early 1880s and in 1882 built the home across the street from the library. The home was torn down last year and is now the site of the new First Federal Savings & Loan building.
Washington Gardner commanded a company of colored troops during the civil war and while in Rock Rapids owned a string of elevators and coal yards. The family moved here from Fayette county, Iowa.
Dan Gardner had been in an Emmetsburg rest home for some time and was hospitalized only a short time before his death.
