Mary Hungerford Hopkins was born near Farmington, Fulton county, Illinois, March 10, 1838 and passed away at her home in Morning Sun, Iowa, Thursday night, April 29, 1915, at 11:30, aged 77 years, 1 month and 20 days. At the age of three months her parents moved near to what is now the town of Elmwood, Peoria county, Illinois. She had one half brother and sister, Mrs. Edison F. Smith, who formerly lived at Morning Sun.

Mrs. Hopkins was married to Wm. H. Hopkins January 30, 1861. To them were born five children, the oldest, a son who died in infancy: Mrs. J. F. Butler, Mrs R. H. Wright, of Hillsboro, Iowa; Mrs. H. W. Smith of Burlington, Iowa; and Mrs. A. D. Gardner, of Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren and one great grandchild survive her.

Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins moved from Elmwood, Ill., to Des Moines county, Iowa, March 1868; moved to Morning Sun 1876; moved to the farm November, 1879. Wm. H. Hopkins died January 19, 1890. Mrs. Hopkins moved back to Morning Sun October 28, 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins united with the Congregational church at Elmwood, Ill., March 13, 1864; later united with the Presbyterian church at Morning Sun, September 1, 1879. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. A. E. Cameron conducting the services.
