Page 1J. N. McClanahan was born February 10, 1842, in Oxford, Ohio, and died on February 21, 1915, at his home in Morning Sun, after several weeks illness. J. N. McClanahan was the son of William and Jane Cornelius McClanahan. He was married to Miss Emma Slade October 7, 1874. To this union eight children were born, two dying in infancy.
Mr. McClanahan enlisted as a volunteer in 1861 in Co. D. Forty-seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served throughout the Civil war. He was honorably discharged from service on the 11th day of August, 1865, at Little Rock, Ark. Soon after the war Mr. McClanahan came west and settled in Morning Sun, on January 1st, 1866.
On January 2, 1899, he bound himself to Thomas D. Wilson for a term of two years to learn the blacksmith trade, which trade he followed for forty-three years. He sold out some five years ago to Adolph Meclenburg and retired from active business. Besides the widow there are left to mourn his death six children, Will, Mark and Dorothy at home; Mrs. C. W. Butler and Fred of Morning Sun, and Mrs. C. R. Hartman of Washington, Iowa. He is also survived by five sisters all living in Ohio, besides a host of friends.
The funeral services were held from the United Presbyterian church Monday, February 22, at 1:30 p. m., conducted by Rev. R. H. Park. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery. About twenty-five members of the A. M. Taylor Post No. 153, G. A. R. of Wapello, attended the funeral.
