Page 1Robert Beck was born March 6, 1849, in Pennsylvania, and departed this life at 12:20 a. m. January 16, 1915, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Norma Jamison, aged 65 years, 10 months and 10 days. Deceased was one of a family of ten children of whom only two remain: Franklin Beck of Grandview and Caroline Gallup of Ashton, Arkansas. When only a boy 5 years of age he came with his parents to Iowa and settled near Grandview and with the exception of about 14 years spent in the west and in Illinois, his home was in Louisa county, until about four years ago when he went to South Dakota, where he took up a claim on which he has since lived.
Mr. Beck was married to Miss Emma McCormick in 1870 and to this union was born one child, Mrs. Cora Jamison, of Wapello. Mr. Beck enlisted in Co. K., of the (unreadable) for nearly two years until the close of the war.
On Monday morning, December 12, an old soldier who lived close to Mr. Beck, noticed that no smoke was coming from the chimney and that no sign of life was visible. He went over to see why and found Mr. Beck lying on the floor, undressed, as if he had just got out of bed and had fallen by the bed and pulled the feather bed over himself before he became unconscious. He had layed thus for 24 hours. He was tenderly cared for by kind neighbors, who did all they could for him and telegraphed to his daughter, Mrs. Jamison. Her husband left at once and brought him to Wapello on a cot, where he was tenderly cared for and all that medical skill and loving care could do was done, but to no avail. With out pain at 12:20 o'clock Saturday morning, he quietly passed away with out ever regaining more than a fleeting consciousness.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his daughter, a brother and sister, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. After a short service at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Norma Jamison, Monday morning, conducted by Rev. A. W. McBlain, the body was taken to Grandview accompanied by a large number of G. A. R. boys. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. W. McBlain in the Methodist church.
