Page 1Louis Schneider was born in Rhein Bischofsheim in the Grandduchy of Baden, June 19, 1824, and died at the home of his son, Dan. P. Schneider on Nov. 13, 1912, being at the time of his death 88 years, 4 months and 24 days of age. When he was 21 years of age he felt the call of the West and like many of his countrymen before him he decided to break the home ties and seek his fortune in America. After coming to this country in 1845 and a residence of some ten years in New York state, young Lewis Schneider pressed on westward with the young wife he had chosen as his life companion, Miss Elizabeth Schneider, locating along the Mississippi Bluff in Louisa county. In 1877 his wife was taken from his side by death after she had born him ten children, of whom only four survive him: Mrs. J. Z. Schneider, of Grandview; Henry W., Geo. J. and Daniel P., who reside near Wapello.
Some years ago he united with the Congregational church at Grandview but on account of physical inability he could not attend church for the past several years. Though he was blind many years and not in good health he seemed to retain his clearness of mind to the last and his faith in Jesus Christ never wavered. The esteem in which he was held was shown in the large attendance of the neighbors and friends at the services at the home which were conducted by Rev. Carl Montanus and the large number who followed the remains to the cemetery at Grandview where he was laid to rest in the family lot beside the wife and other who had gone on before.
