David Hovey Gillette, son of Alonzo J. Gillette and Martha Hovey-Gillette, was born at Mt. Morris, New York, on the 8th day of June, 1836. From the age of 16 to 20 years he attended a Lock on Erie Canal. At the age of 20 he answered the call to the west, and settled at Wapello Iowa. He was then employed as an engineer and later became a blacksmith, and followed that trade until about 10 years ago, when he retired from active life.

David Hovey Gillette was united in marriage with Louise Williams, the daughter of Robert Williams, on August 25, 1868 and his wife died on January 8th, 1888. To this union were born four children, Leora, the wife of William C. Hannum, who died on December 24, 1887; Lucius P. Gillette, of this city; Ida Dunn, of Chicago and David W. Gillette, of Danbury, Wisconsin. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Augusta Hills, who resides at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

David Hovey Gillette passed through the sunshine and the shadows of this life. He was a devoted husband and father, and performed these duties well. He was a public spirited man, and was always greatly interested in the welfare of his friends, his neighbors and his town. He died at the home of his son Lucius P. Gillette, in this city, on the 18th day of October, 1912. The funeral was held from the home of his son, L. P. Gillette, Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Coats, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in the Wapello cemetery.
