Page 1The citizens of this place were surprised and grieved Wednesday, July 31st, to hear of the sudden death of one of Morning Sun's old and highly respected residents, Joseph Boltz, who suffered a stroke of apoplexy and passed away about 12:00 o'clock Wednesday. He had been in feeble health for some weeks, but was able to be about and was working in the garden at his home when the end came. Joseph Boltz, who for many years was engaged in agricultural pursuits, was living in Morning Sun, enjoying the just reward of a well spent life. He was born in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, June 20, 1834. After the completion of his education, he remained a member of the parental household until he had attained his twenty-third year, at which time he left home to begin life for himself.
He made his way westward to Iowa, and there engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1860, when he went to Denver, Colo. After spending a short time there he returned to Fairfield, Iowa, and in the spring of 1861 came to Louisa county and entered the Union army. He enlisted a Burlington, June 2, 1861 and was mustered out on the 9th of September, 1861. At Bayou Meto, Arkansas received two bullets which he carried all his life. After his discharge he returned to Louisa county. He engaged in the cultivation of his farm and stock raising until 1891, when he retired and moved to Morning Sun.
Mr. Boltz was married June 4, 1865, to Miss Elizabeth Sarah Edwards, a daughter of the late Hugh and Eleanor Edwards. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Boltz were born six children, Joseph E., a resident of Louisa county; William S., of Green Ridge,Mo.; Elanor, deceased; Nancy Emma, wife of William Reynolds, of Upland, Cal.; Mary Eva, who married Charles Morrison, of Morning Sun, and Oscar, of Fairfield, Iowa.
Both he and his wife have long been members of the Presbyterian church. He was a Christian gentleman, one who always had a pleasant cheery greeting for all. He is survived by his widow and five children, who have the sympathy of many friends. The funeral services were held from the home Friday, August 2, at 2 p. m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. A. E. Cameron, assisted by Dr. C. D. Trumbull. Interment at Elmwood cemetery.
