He was the first born child of Elisha and Eliza Rosborough Beatty. When he was two years old his parents removed from Ireland to Muscatine, Iowa. In 1850 the family took up residence on the farm on Muscatine Island, where they have ever since resided. In early life Mr. John Beatty became a Christian, and a member of the Island M. E. church. He was a valuable man in Sunday School work, and at different times filled several church offices, being a trustee at the time of his death. He was a good neighbor, a kind husband and father and lived a clean life.

On November 5, 1891, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Rosborough of Moline, Ill. Two children were born to them, Byron dying in infancy and Mildred, who with the mother, is left in the saddened home. He is also survived by only brother, James Q. Beatty.
