Page 1The following from the Muscatine Journal of Monday tells of the tragic death of Thomas Nevins, who formerly resided with his father over north of Hogback. It will be recalled that he was with his father, Patrick Nevins, at the time the latter was burned to death last fall in the destruction of their home, the fire being caused by a spark from the old man's pipe. The son escaped, only to meet an equally tragic fate in the waters of the Mississippi. The body of Thomas Nevins, of Louisa county, was found floating down the Mississippi river near the Hershey chute about 11 o'clock Sunday morning, by Walter Snyder, of Dewey avenue, South Muscatine.
None of the details are known but at the inquest held Monday afternoon the verdict of the jury was that the deceased met his death as a result of accidental suffocation in the mud and water of the river. The testimony of the witnesses showed that the man had been riding on the Muscatine North & South passenger about 10 o'clock Saturday night, and it is supposed he fell from the train while going over the trestle on front street but no one witnessed the accident. He was on the train at Grandview and no one noticed him get off at this point. Nevins had a sister, Mrs. John Hintermeister, living on Nebraska street, and often got off the train at the round house but Saturday night he did not do so. Since the death of his father he has been living either at Wapello with his sister, Mrs. Chris. Kallenberger or in South Muscatine with Mrs. John Hintermeister. Aside from these two sisters, he is survived by another, Mrs. Margaret Flood, of Mt. Pleasant and one brother, Simon, of Iowa City.
