Alexander Koehler was born c 1834 in Zittau, Saxony, Germany. He died on October 14, 1865 at the Post Hospital, Vicksburg, MS. On October 12, 1865 he was on guard duty when taken ill. He was then taken to the Post Hospital where he died of consumption. He was in the 33rd Illinois Infantry, Company H. In a book about the 33rd Illinois his superior officer, John M. Follett wrote that "Alexander Koehler enlisted at Geneseo, Illinois. Re-enlisted as a veteran; wounded at Black River, Miss. Died at Vicksburg, Miss, October 14, 1865. Corporal Koehler was a fine German-American solder beloved by every member of H Company." Alexander married Mary Elizabeth Jenkins in Keokuk Co, Iowa June 22, 1858. Their son, William Columbus Koehler was born March 23, 1859 in Keokuk County, IA. He was delivered by a Dr. Mitchell and Mary's mother Polly was in attendance. Alexander, Mary and William are listed on the 1860 Keokuk County Census but as "Taylor"; with Alexander's profession listed as coal miner. Within six months of Alexander's death Mary married Jacob Quick. I do not any further information about Alexander. Family "legend" has it that Alexander came to the us when he was 14 years old; his family in Germany had great estates; and they lived a long time. I do not have any other information about Alexander, though, I have be searching a long time. I do not know if he came to America with other family or if he came on his own. I do not know which Port he entered.
