In Response To: zarahemia, lee county (joan)

Zarahemla. The name of the plat of a projected, pioneer town somewhere in Lee County. It was a subject of an act to provide for assessment and collection of taxes by the legislature of the Territory of Iowa, approved February 17, 1842. (Laws, 1841-42, page 90.) Zarahemla is a Book of Mormon name frequently used for a country and an individual. Evidently the projectors were Mormon or Latter Day Saints. There is a place in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, named Zarahemla(sometimes misspelled Zarahelma), so named for the same reason as was the Lee County, Iowa Village.
