Interested in information about Eugene Whitcomb's father, Samuel Whitcomb. Probate records ( Lee County Book 4 pg 567) grant guardianship of Samuel's children; Moses, Mary Elizabeth, Lewis P., and Eugene ( my great grand father) on Aug.23,1847 to William O'Hart, ? Lilley and A.Whitcomb (any information on these people??). Also, there appears to be a daughter Melisa, 24 born in Ohio who married Arthur Hafferty. The Whitcomb family farm is on Mississippi River bottom land south of Fort Madison, section 12 sw 80 acres. This land most likely originally belonged to Samuel. Willing to share additional Whitcomb or Bullard family information, plus some family photos.
1850 census shows Moses in Fort Madison jail, and records indicate there was a second probate hearing for the childrens custody. Any information concerning Moses would be appreciated.
There is also some mystery about the location of Eugenes grave. Obit. says he was buried in Wilson cemetery. However there is a marker in Oakland that indicates Eugene and Lucy are buried together in Oakland.
Having visited Lee county this last summer ,I would be willing to give some travel incites to anyone planning a geneology trip to Lee county. It can be a wonderful vacation, and hopefully will be as rewarding in information as mine. Your plans should include the winerys, and Amana, and a Fort Madison Bed n Breakfast.
