Anamosa Mental hospital

I know that Anamosa is a prison, was there by any chance a mental hospital during the 1940's? I have a cousin in Sweden who is trying to help someone find out information about an uncle that spent time from 1946-1949, and they did not know if he was in the prison or or in a mental hospital..
