Your post mentioned both Crain and Shaw families of Jones County, Iowa. The following two class of 1909 graduates (out of three total) had the same last names respectively:
Alma Jessie Crain and James Robert Shaw."As the curtain arose the following class of 1909 were seated on the stage:
Alma Jessie Crain.
James Robert Shaw.
Zella Elizabeth Lane. The exercises opened with an overture by Cowan's Concert Orchestra, after which Rev. Kidder delivered the invocation. The Cornet duet by G. B Macomber and Earnest Westpfahl was well rendered.
"The Night Brings Out the Stars" was the subject of Alma Jessie Crain's oration. As she stepped to the front of the stage and began to speak it was plainly to be seen that she had confidence in herself, and her effort showed that that was the case. Her oration brought to the people many beautiful thoughts clearly and forcibly expressed.
"For a subject for his oration, James Robert Shaw had selected 'Roosevelt, the Greatest President since Lincoln'. It was a big subject, but Mr. Shaw handled it in a masterful manner. Mr. Shaw's oration showed the results of a mind well stored with knowledge of current events and revealed many important historical events. He eulogized Ex-President Roosevelt very highly, and in a manner very creditably." [1909 Olin Recorder]
