Gary A. Thomsen, 71, of Olin, Iowa passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at home.A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Dawson Funeral Services in Olin is caring for his family at this time.
Gary Allen was born on February 12, 1953, in Anamosa, Iowa to Max and Minna (Carstensen) Thomsen. He graduated from Olin High School in 1971. After graduation he worked for Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for over 40 years until retirement. At that time, he purchased a second home along the Pacific Ocean in Barra de Navidad, Mexico and wintered there while spending summers in Iowa. Gary was a member of Little Bear Country Club in Wyoming and the Wapsipinicon Country Club in Anamosa. He enjoyed spending his time on the golf course. He also was a member of the Sprint Selzer Bicycle Club in Fairfax, Iowa and rode with them on the annual RAGBRAI trip across Iowa many years. Several years he bicycled across Europe, making new friends wherever he went and stopping in Germany to visit aunts, uncles and cousins. Gary was a very social guy whose charisma was infectious, and he never knew a stranger. His many acquaintances include noted county music performers and friends in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee.
Those left to cherish his memory are his significant other of over 20 years Marlene Levsen, brothers Paul (Linda) Thomsen of Anamosa and Gordon (Betty) Thomsen of Olin, niece Stacey (Jeff)Thomsen Bennett, nephews Mark (Megan) Thomsen and Jeff (Angela) Thomsen, step niece Lori (Ben) Chamberlin Colehour and several great nieces and nephews, also Marlene’s grandchildren Beau Summers and Rayanne Zeltner.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a step nephew Tim Chamberlin.
