Funeral services for Gary Lynn Steffens, 33, Oxford Junction, were held at St. Mark's Lutheran church Jan. 22, with the Rev. Douglas Holmgren officiating. Burial was in the Mayflower cemetery at Oxford Junction.
Mr. Steffens was killed in a traffic accident 1.5 miles north of Maquoketa Jan. 19 when the car he was driving struck the rear of a semi-trailer.
The son of Vernon and Darleen Burian Steffens, he was born at Anamosa Oct. 20, 1949. He graduated from Oxford Junction high school and Iowa State University. While at ISU he joined the Iowa National Guard, serving 8 years in active reserve and 3 with the inactive reserve. He recently received the rank of captain and had recently been appointed as a company commander at Dubuque.
In March of 1971 he started a feed and fertilizer business in Oxford Junction. Sept. 28, 1974 he married Cynthia Clossen at Oxford Junction. The couple expanded their business to a new location and added a grain business in 1978 and a gasoline station in 1981.
Mr. Steffens was involved in many community affairs at Oxford Junction including the volunteer fire department, Wapsie American Legion Post 473 and library board. He was a director of the Iowa Grain and Feed Association, a past member of the county extension council, member of the state extension council, and was a 4-H leader.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran church of which he has served as council member. He also served on the Oxford Junction city council.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jason; a daughter, Elizabeth; his parents; a brother, Greg, of Grinnell; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Alma Steffens, Mechanicsville, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Grace Burian, Oxford Junction.
